Realising the Challenges of Crew Rosterers in the Major Airlines

Travellers and consumers in the United Kingdom often see the public face of the airlines as ticket agents, flight attendants, and pilots. However, there are many more professionals that make the UK airline industry work efficiently. Baggage handlers allow people to have all of their possessions by the time they land at their destination. Mechanics keep airliners safe and sound for millions of travellers every year. Perhaps the most overlooked professional in the major airlines is that of the crew roster manager. Crew rosters establish the crew rotation and schedule for an airline. Young professionals entering this job need to understand the challenges faced on a daily basis before heading into the workplace.

Crew rosters start with the basic challenge of meeting national and international aviation regulations in setting up schedules. Flight crews need to be in the air under a certain number of hours each day and need days off after a certain number of days on the job. As well, rosters need to stay updated on health issues with individual workers as well as vacation days mandated by a professional’s contract. In all, there are a number of bureaucratic land mines in which a crew rosterer needs to avoid in setting up a daily schedule.

Beyond regulatory issues, crew rosters also need to take into account heavy and slow seasons for an airline. There are many times in the year where additional crews are needed and maintenance staff needs to be increased to deal with heavier traffic for an airline. Winter and summer holiday seasons require more flights and a higher number of mechanics to keep up with routine procedures. The bureaucratic and chronological issues involved with crew rostering in the United Kingdom are quite daunting for even the best crew rosterer.

More experienced crew rosterers would tell those just entering the profession that it is not all regulatory guidelines and holiday breaks. Crew rosterers need to develop a keen sense of putting the right people on various flights and on various projects. For example, a rosterer for an international airline needs to look at the experience level of various flight crews to determine their ability to deal with more difficult routes. Routes from London to place in Asia and Africa require experienced pilots and flight attendants who are accustomed to long flights. Rosterers can let younger crews get flights under their belt on European flights or regional flights. This nuanced approach to rostering comes with experience, though young professionals can begin to develop this knowledge by asking their supervisors and studying the rostering process.

How Can You Lessen the Odds of the Airlines Losing Your Luggage When You Travel?

It is estimated that more than a million bags are lost by commercial airlines each year in the United States alone.  How much luggage that get lost in the whole world is anybody’s guess.  Here are some tips that may help you recover your bags if they are ever lost.

Attach two or three tags with your name, home address, and phone number to the handle and the zipper-pulls of each bag that you are checking.  There is less of a chance that all of the tags could get torn off during transit.  You should make sure that you have removed any old airline tags that are still attached to the luggage you’re checking as they could confuse the baggage handlers.

Be sure to place the same contact information, including a copy of your itinerary and your destination address inside each piece luggage.  That way, if they do get lost and are found in time, they could be forwarded to your hotel.

If you can, pick luggage with preferably a bright or odd color that will stand out from all of the black and brown bags.  Know the brand name of the luggage that you own and attach a colorful scarf or ribbon to the handle to make identification easier.  Stick a few decals or a contrasting colored tape to all of the sides of the bags so they can be easier to see as it goes around the carousel.  Remember these details, or even better, take a digital picture of your luggage just before you leave and bring it with you.  This will also help the lost luggage airport staff in finding your bags if they become lost in transit and turn up at their office.  It will also help if you have to make a claim.

It helps to make a list of what you have in your luggage and carry that list in you carry-on bag.  The chance of your luggage getting lost in transit increases dramatically when you have connecting, or delayed flights.  Always pack all of your valuables, including your laptop or Blackberry, travel documents, prescriptions, etc., in your carry-on bag.  It makes sense to pack only the things you can afford to lose in your checked baggage.  Most analysts believe that the airline industry’s problem of lost luggage is not going to be resolved anytime soon.

What should you do your luggage gets lost?

Go immediately to the baggage claim office and file your claim.  Many airlines have a twenty-four hour window of time starting from when your flight arrives to file a claim and be eligible for compensation.  Get a claim receipt and check the tracking of your luggage with the airline by phone, or on the airline’s website.  Make sure you keep all your flight documents until the lost luggage problem has been resolved.

How can you guarantee that the airlines won’t lose your luggage?

There are some companies like FedEx, UPS or DHL, that can send your luggage in the U.S. directly to your hotel or street address for a very reasonable cost.  If you’re staying at a hotel, your luggage will be taken to your room by a bellboy.  When you consider that in the United States alone, over a million bags are lost by the airlines each year, this service is well worth considering.  If you are planning to travel by air throughout Europe, FirstLuggage.com, provides a similar service.

How Flight Engineers Can Advance Within the Airline Industry

Advancement within the UK airline industry can be tough for any professional. Flight engineers often feel stuck in their positions, as they do not have the same high level of direct advancement opportunities as pilots or customer service representatives. However, flight engineers in the United Kingdom have plenty of opportunities available to them outside of their current positions. These professionals just need to know the skills necessary to advance into any job within the industry. Flight engineers can gain financial incentives through hard work, advance to management positions within a flight engineering department, or advance to general airline management.

Flight engineers need to develop a sophisticated knowledge of airline technology and trends within the industry in order to advance. The average UK flight engineer knows everything there is to know about their specific job and the policies of their airline. However, exceptional flight engineers research different plane issues and understand the engineering issues prevalent throughout the airline industry. As well, successful flight engineers get to know the techniques and machinery used by other airlines in the United Kingdom in order to broaden their knowledge base. This knowledge comes in handy when it comes to casual conversation or assessments.

In addition to a broad knowledge of the industry, flight engineers need to develop a network of references in order to advance to higher positions. Engineers should see their colleagues and supervisors as a great first line of references for advancement possibilities within their current company. These professionals know a flight engineer best and can attest to their skills. As well, flight engineers should use every opportunity to attend aviation conferences or events where they can meet professionals outside of their airline. These conferences are not only informative but they allow engineers from different airlines the opportunity to speak about common issues. These conversations can create a mutual respect between engineers, not to mention the networking possibilities.

A final way in which flight engineers can advance within the UK airline industry is to seek out advanced education. Some engineers seek out further qualifications in aviation engineering, which can lead to team management or facility management down the road. Other engineers seek out business administration degrees or similar non-engineering approaches in order to land an administrative job in their future. Many airlines will help their talented engineers seek additional training or education in order to improve their ability to advance. The airline gains an educated employee while a flight engineer gets the chance to move upward quickly.

airboyd.tv Death in the Air @ Time Magazine http From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia en.wikipedia.org The 1960 New York air disaster was a collision on December 16, 1960, between two airliners over Staten Island, New York City, New York, United States, in which one plane crashed into Staten Island and the other into Park Slope, a Brooklyn neighborhood. The crash killed all 84 people aboard Flight 826, 44 on Flight 266 and six people on the ground. The two aircraft collided in mid-air in heavy cloud a mile west of Miller Field, a military airfield on Staten Island, at 10:33 am Eastern Time. Weather conditions at the time were light rain and fog (which had been preceded by a snowfall). According to information from the flight 826′s flight recorder (the first time a “black box” had been used to provide extensive details in a crash investigation) the United plane was 12 miles (19 km) off course and in 81 seconds dived 3600 feet (1100 m) a minute and dropped its speed from more than 500 miles per hour (800 km/h) to 363 miles per hour (584 km/h) when it slammed into the right side of the TWA plane at between 5250 and 5175 feet (1577 m). The Challenges and Pitfalls of Airline Captains

Young pilots and aviation trainees alike dream of becoming an airline captain. In the United Kingdom, airline captains typically need to have a decade or more of experience in the airline industry before settling into the captain’s chair. As well, captains usually have to exert an extraordinary amount of patience in rising to such a high level as there are many pilots waiting to ascend the airline ranks. However, the large number of pilots waiting for captain positions in the UK is only one of the challenges a pilot faces in advancing their career. By recognising these challenges, an aspirant to the captain’s chair can work on their skills and manage these issues before they become problems.

One of the major challenges for airline captains is learning to delegate responsibility to fellow staff members. First officers, trainee pilots, and flight attendants alike need to help ease the pressure off of captains in terms of pre-flight checks and customer service. However, airline captains have risen through the ranks and are used to doing these things as part of a team. A good airline captain learns quickly that their role is to be a leader and to be decisive in case of emergencies. Younger professionals in need of seasoning can do a lot of the administrative tasks required before, during, and after flights.

Another challenge for airline captains comes in building a strong flight team. Many captains have young co-pilots and other flight crew members, which mean that there may be a generational gap between the veteran captain and his youthful professionals. Airline captains will usually find that time is best solution to this challenge, as airline crews get comfortable with each other after a few weeks of repeated flight. However, a captain should also feel free to be outgoing with his staff and look for ways to relate to younger professionals.

A third pitfall of the airline captain position in the United Kingdom is the increasing amounts of regulatory and administrative tasks that they have to take on. As pilots age, the government’s regulatory body requires increased scrutiny on physical and mental condition. Airline captains often have to perform physical tests every six months to maintain their position and their certification. As well, airline captains are ultimately responsible for all of the administrative tasks that they perform. Many airline captains delegate this to junior pilots, which mean that a captain needs to look over the materials and affix their name. Captains need to take this challenge in stride, as it is meant for the safety and security of everyone in the airplane.

Now stop spending large chunk of capital on your airfare or upgrading airline flights tickets to Alabama. The Airports in Alabama are the great place to look for great deals on Cheap Flights in Alabama.

Here are 4 great ways or tricks to get upgraded from economy class on airline flights tickets to Alabama.

First, if you receive a valid upgrade certificate for being a top tier member of the frequent flyer program of the airlines, you will get upgraded on flight tickets. When you are traveling on oversold flight, your change of getting upgraded is much more. You will be able to upgrade your airline flights tickets if you travel with a top tier member also.

Second, if you have boarded an oversold flight but traveling with a full fare ticket, your chance of upgrading your flight ticket is more that of others.

Another tricky way of upgrade is to be well dressed and well mannered when traveling alone in a flight that is oversold. At the last minute the airline agent usually upgrades few passengers and always considers well-dressed and solo travelers.

Again, when you are flying on an empty flight, the airline upgrades few passengers to the middle of the aircraft in order to maintain the flight’s weight and balance.

It is often seen that frequent flyer get the opportunity to get upgrade-able fare. But in frequent traveler are highly recommended not to ask the airline agents for such upgrade as they are agitated by such queries and demands.

If you are traveling on a reduced fare ticket, you should never harass the gate agent or flight attendants for an upgrade even though the check-in have accepted your request for an upgrade as if they are annoyed, you will receive an unwanted roguish behavior or even kicked off the flight.

Newly Expanded Routes for Turkish Airlines Amidst Impressive Profits in 2010

Turkish Airlines, which is Europe’s 4th largest airline carrier, is quickly moving into the position of becoming an airline industry leader. The airlines has destinations across the world in Asia, Europe, North America, South America and is making inroads to service select locations in Africa. This company is approaching 80 years of flying business. This company has seen the good with the bad. However, the one thing that is very amazing, especially for a global airline, is the fact that not only are they still viable, but they are even more stronger today than ever.

Spain’s Valencia is the newest addition to the long list of routes operated by Turkish Airlines and there will be four weekly flights to this destination. The next route to open up will be Istanbul to Malaga, also in Spain, which should start in April. There will be three flights per week on this route. These destinations are being added to the existing routes that Turkish Airlines flies to Spain, namely Barcelona and Madrid. This is planned to be quite a busy year for the Turkish airline and these additional routes are just the start of it. 2011 will witness a significant route expansion with many new destinations joining the list. A number of flights to France are being planned for the summer of 2011, with destinations such as Toulouse, Paris, Nice and Lyon. With these additions, the airline will have 175 destinations in its offering, even though the year is still at the beginning. Negotiations between the English soccer team, Manchester United, and Turkish Airlines were finalized in October 2010 which resulted in a three-year contract. Manchester United will partner with Turkish Airlines for a TV commercial that is meant to position the airline as a great means of travel for business-class passengers. This is an exciting time for both organizations for many reasons. The idea of the new series of commercials is for them to feature some of the top players having a great time while traveling business class with Turkish Airlines.

Elite Plus members can also benefit by having their rewards consolidated into one account with Miles & Smiles family memberships. Essentially, the Elite Plus members will enjoy greater convenience because their earned miles will be located in a single account.

Any miles earned will also apply to family members of account holders too. Members can accumulate more miles by simply booking flights with any airline within the Star Alliance partnership, or using a Miles & Smiles credit card to pay for purchases. Turkish Airlines has an extensive history that has seen quite a few problems at the beginning. Such a situation is not unusual for airlines, though, since they have to face a number of issues. There have been a wide range of modifications implemented in this airline at all levels. They have learned their lessons well, though, and have come out on top as a powerful company that is capable of adapting. Some of the exciting changes and events taking place at Turkish Airlines have been presented here.

Uncovering Richard Simon Of Chicago President and CEO of United Service Companies

Man of the Month: Richard Simon
He started as a janitor. Now he’s the CEO.Richard Simon President and CEO, United Service Companies

Way Back in 1965, United Service Companies began as a small Chicago janitorial service, a far cry from the national superpower it is today. USC now provides cleaning, staffing and security services of all kinds, operating in cities from the East Coast to Hawaii – and many in between.

The ever growing client base includes major hotels, trade shows, convention centers, airlines, hospitals, newspapers and food processing plants. And the man navigating such impressive growth? President and CEO Richard Simon – who started with the company as a part-time high school employee.

In this economic downturn, what has been key to your continued success?

We added market share; while many companies were contracting, we were expanding. Our management team was in daily contact with our clients to provide more services and they were acquiring new business almost weekly. We think if we’re not moving forward, we’re in reverse.

With locations throughout the U.S. how do you manage everything from Chicago?

Our management team in each location has to take responsibility for insuring all customer expectations are met daily, and our senior management racks up millions of frequent flier miles a year. Personally, I try to limit my travel to 20 weeks a year, about half of what it once was.

What’s the biggest obstacle you had to overcome to keep business up?

For us there is no single issue. It’s a daily task to keep all members of the team focused on their area of the business while respecting that each supports the other. If our customers know each day that we’re 100 percent there to service their needs, we’re on target. How do we do it? A great management team.

Outside of work, what are you passionate about?

I support endeavors that help children. One is the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation that assists the families of fallen and injured officers.

Your greatest personal accomplishment.

Two: Talking my wife into marrying me and the birth of our son.
Do you see yourself ever retiring?

Not really. Almost every person I know who retired from something they like is sorry and looking for something to do. I’m happy where I am.

Favorite way to spend time off?
What time off?

What does family mean to you?
I have a great wife who helps keep both of my feet on the ground and a son who makes me realize my greatest accomplishment is yet to come as he grows from an early teen into a young man.

What is the most innovative aspect of your company?
The recruitment and training of qualified people: it’s all about our team.

What challenges do you foresee in your industry?
No more today than before. The solution is the same: recruit great people on all levels, from entry to management. Train them, provide them with the tools to work with, give them the authority to make decisions with the view that they’re empowered to think outside the box.

Is Using A Credit Card Onboard A British Airways Airline Safe?

If you fly frequently, whether for business or pleasure your main wish is to arrive at your destination safely with all your luggage and possessions with you. A secondary wish might be to travel in comfort; British Airways has always recognised this and has sought to cater for your every need. By using your frequent flyer credit card, you can enjoy VIP services such as express check-in and access to comforts like pre-flight dinners and restful nights in the club world bedrooms aboard the airline. With such luxuries BA has taken the tension and stress out of long distance air travel.

In a bid to improve the convenience for you the traveller, in early December 2006 British Airways launched the on flight chip and pin credit card service. Now you can use credit cards on all your BA flights. The chip and pin service was introduced in-flight to ensure a reduction in the number of fraudulent card activities in the air. But how secure is using your credit card on an airplane?

The device used by British Airways is called the SkyPort Plus and its wireless design means it can reach any passenger regardless of where you are sitting. The device stores information on the credit card hot lists and it verifies transactions against fraudulent credit cards in under a second. This is good news for anyone who has had their card stolen. But with such limited personal space, how do you protect your PIN while on board an airline?

The same rules would apply as if you were using your credit card on the ground. You must shield your PIN. Aboard the airline, the chances of someone using a mobile phone to record you entering your pin might be slimmer than on a crowded high street but the chances of someone seeing you enter your pin might be just as possible, especially if you are sitting in the middle seat of a 5 seat row.

The SkyPort Plus device was designed to be passed to you by the flight attendant so you can insert your card and enter your pin. If you need to pass your card to the attendant, ensure you cover it with your hands and never let your credit card out of your sight. When entering your PIN into the device, make sure you shield the keypad from prying eyes. If you are seated near the window at night make sure you pull down the shade to avoid any reflections in the window.

You should keep all your receipts in a safe place and destroy any incorrect and void receipts safely when you arrive at your destination.

BA’s Retail Business Manager, Richard Cushing, has stated the new on-board chip and pin system has already helped to ‘reduce the level of fraud substantially’. While this may be true it is still up to you to keep taking the necessary precautions to ensure you are not a victim of credit card fraud, whether on the ground or in the air.
