Phuket – the gateway to the Indian Ocean

To be the only yacht in sight from horizon to horizon, anchored off a pristine, deserted, tropical island beach, may seem like a distant dream to most sailors – but sailing in Phuket it is everyday reality.

Unique, too, among cruising destinations is Phuket’s climate. There is no winter; there are no hurricanes and no typhoons. Temperatures range between 25° and 32°C throughout the year, and the sea rarely varies from 28°C.

Located in the Andaman Sea (off Thailand’s southwest coast) Phuket is best known amongst regional sailors for the most advanced sailing infrastructure in Thailand. As a cruising base, Phuket is unbeatable. The mystical waters, islands and limestone karsts of Phang-nga Bay are just a few hours’ sail east from the major anchorages; the stunning Similan Islands are a day’s motor-sail to the west, while Myanmar’s practically unexplored Mergui Archipelago is easily accessible to the north.

To the south is the almost uninhabited Butang Group – part of the 51-island Hat Chao Mai National Park – teeming with an abundance of fascinating and unusual wildlife. A short sail east brings you to the mysterious unspoiled island of Tarutao, just 6 km (4 miles) from the Malaysian island of Langkawi, and just one day out of Phuket. A former penal colony, Tarutao abounds with interesting caves and hidden creeks leading into the mountainous interior; a primeval world where time stands still.

Phang-nga Bay itself, bounded by Phuket, Phang-nga and Krabi provinces – boasting over 100 islands and sheer-sided mountains rising vertically out of the sea – has produced some of Thailand’s most spectacular tourist images. As a result, it is a popular destination with day tours and kayakers exploring the bay’s islands and sea caves. Yet, despite its international renown, the bay is practically deserted by mid-afternoon.

For enthusiasts who prefer as much luxury and convenience as possible combined with their sailing, Phuket is already home to three international-standard marinas, The Yacht Haven Marina, Boat Lagoon Marina and the recently-opened Royal Phuket Marina, which was voted “The Best of the Best Marinas” by British Airways’ First Class in-flight magazine, First Life. Many more marinas are planned.

Yet, for those who prefer to sail away from civilisation, just a couple of hours sail from Phuket – will seem like a world away.

Boasting only one regatta until a few years ago, there is now a multitude of choice, in terms of time, style and location, for those who prefer to mix a touch of action with their sailing holiday in Thailand.

The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, now in its nineteenth year, attracts around 100 yachts and is held in early December. Phang-Nga Bay Regatta, bringing together up to 40 competitors for a more relaxed week, takes place at Chinese New Year, against what must be the most dramatic scenic background of any regatta in the world. Phuket Race Week in its second year also plays an important part in the regatta calendar, being staged in the windy month of July during the southwest monsoon.

Whilst the competitive fun of racing in tropical waters is why people take part in Phuket’s regattas, they all leave with fond memories of the beachside regatta parties. These relaxed, informal parties have become a keynote feature of yachting events in the kingdom.

Whether racing in a tropical regatta or simply cruising among Phuket’s pristine islands, the warm Thai welcome, superb cuisine and the cultural charm – that together make Phuket one of the world’s favourite cruising destinations – make for an unforgettable experience not to be missed

    Travel Nepal

Enchantment is everywhere in Nepal; be it in the cool and invigorating shade of the high mountains, or on terraced farmlands carved like stairways out of hill ridges, or still across waterfalls, creeks, rushing mountain rivers amidst gorges, valleys and forests teeming with a cornucopia of flora and fauna. There are lakes amidst breathtaking settings, strong-current rivers for rafting, Wildlife Safaris, the tallest mountains to climb, trekking across vales and dales, and, above all, warm, friendly, welcoming people. In this respect, Nepal becomes a perfect holiday destination for tourists, trekkers, mountaineers, writers, honeymooners, lovers, retired people and people interested in research.

    Nepal Geography

As Nepal is sandwiched between two economic and geographical Leviathans, it is rightfully regarded as “ A Yam between Two Boulders” as While Nepal abuts on Indian border in the east, the west and the South, Tibetan Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China shares the vast Himalayan frontier with Nepal. The length of the county is 885 kilometers from east to west, and its breath varies from 145 kilometers to 241 kilometers from north to south. The total area is 147,181 sq. kilometers.

     Climate

Nepal isn’t only the home of mysterious Yeti and elusive Snow Leopard, but also a constant cause of wonder for meteorologists for her simply amazing variations in climatic conditions. Divided into three different geographical regions, Nepal houses the snow-capped Himalayas in the north, a vast stretch of plains in the south and two chains of hills, known as Mahabharata and Churiya range, acting as a geological bridge between the northern and southern region.

The most astonishing thing about the geography of Nepal is that the distance between the tropical lowlands and the snow-capped mountainous region is very less. While the distance between the tropical and alpine regions in most of the countries around the globe is more than 1000 km, it is just less than 100 km in some places in Nepal.. The temperature varies between zero in the mountains to over 30 degrees Celsius in the valleys, and to mercury plummeting up to 38 degrees during summer in the lowlands.

    Population

‘Unity in diversity’ is really the mot just for a multi-ethnic, multicultural and multilingual country like Nepal. It had a population of 18,462,081 at the time of the 1991 census. The average population density at the time was 125 persons per sq km (329 per sq mi), although nearly half the people were concentrated in the narrow Terai region. In contrast, the 2003 population estimate was 26,469,569. The population has grown rapidly since 1950 when there were only 9 million people. In 2003 the population was increasing at an annual rate of 2.3 percent. Only 12 percent of the population lived in urban areas. The rate of population in the urban areas, however, has grown significantly thanks to a number of social, political and economic reasons.

    Get in

You may need a tourist Visa to enter the country. A propspective visitor can apply for the visa from several embassies and consulates in most countries in the world. Nepal has diplomatic missions in

Australia, Bangladesh, Belgium, Burma, Canada, China, Denmark, Finaland, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Myanmar, The Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan, Phillipines, Spain , Sweeden, Switzerland, Thailand, Tibet, the United Kingdom and the United States of America that issue visas to the propective visitors.

    Entrance/Egress

The following entery/exit points have been set by the government of Nepal for the foreign visitors:

    1. Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu

    2. Kodari, Sindhupalchowk (North)

    4. Belahia,Bhairhawa (West)

    5. Birgunj, Parsa (Central Nepal)

    6. Jamunaha, Nepalgunj (Mid-East)

    7. Mohana, Dhangadi (Far-West)

    8. Gadda Chauki, Mahendranagar (Far-West)

    Via Air

Since there is only one international airport, Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu, in Nepal, it is the Hobson’s choice for vistors to start their Himalayan voyage from the capital city itself. The following airlines company operate their services from/to Kathmandu:

    1. Nepal Airlines (Run by the Nepalese government, it operates its service to/from Bangkok, Banglore, Calcutta, Delhi, Dubai, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Osaka, Paris, London, Shanghai, Singapore)

    2. Korean Air (Seoul)

    3. Biman Bangladesh Airlines (Dhaka)

    7. Gulf Air (Abu Dhabi)

    8. Indian Airlines (Delhi, Calcutta, Varanasi)

    9. Qatar Airways ( Doha)

    10.  Thai International (Bangkok)

    11. Martin Air (Amsterdam via Sharjah)

    Via Land

Although Indo/Nepal border is a porous one, you must enter the country by road from India through one of the border crossing points ( as described under the heading Entrance/Egress). If you are coming from Tibet, the route is Kodari, Sindhupalchowk. There is no national passenger rail service in Nepal, but there is a rail service operating from Calcutta, India. A train by the name Mithila Express plies regularly between Howrah Station, Calcutta, to Birgunj, one of the chief entry points to Nepal.

    Contact

Although the comminication infrastructure of Nepal is not to the world’s standard, still the pincipal cities across the countries entertain almost all forms of sophisticated communication systems. These include:

    1. Telephone: The international country code for Nepal is 977. There are two to three digit area code and six-digit local phone numbers. The communication system, operated by Nepal Telecom, a quasi-governmental organization, caters its service in almost all the seventy-five district of the country. But some off-the-map villages don’t have telephone facilities. However, the East-West optical fibre project, which is on the verge of its completion, is expected to cover all the villages and hamlets of the country within two to three years time. Besides Nepal Telecom, United Tele Communication Limited (UTL), a privately owned company, is providing its services in Kathmandu Valley.

    2. Cell Phones

Mobiles are widely used, but due to the geoprphical constraints , some rural areas have only analog service, or no service at all. Nepal Telecom and UTL operate operate CDMA networks; Mero Mobile, a private mobile company, operates the only GPRS network. Travellers planning to bring their GPRS phones with them might do well to check that their handset supports the appropriate frequencies.

    3. Internet

There are cyber cafes in almost most of the tourist areas all over the country. A trekker can surf the net in Solokhumbu, the entry point of Mount Everest Region. Nomal rate is Rs 20 to 30 per hours in the main cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara. New Pokhara Lodge Lakeside Pokhara offer free internet to hotel’s customers.

    4. Mail

The snail mail system is there but, as a rule, it is not always speedy. Also, international parcel postal services can be costly. Furthermore, internationally acclaimed courier service providers like DHL and Fedex also have their branches in most parts of the country.

  • The East Coast of Thailand

    The East Coast of Thailand

Located within easy reach of the capital, the east coast resorts and islands attract a mixed crowd of weekending Bangkokians, pleasure-seeking expats and budget-conscious backpackers. Transport connections are good, prices are generally more reasonable than at the biggest southern resorts and, if you’re heading overland to Cambodia, the east coast beaches make challenging territory across the border. You’ll find the whitest beaches on the offshore islands –the five-hundred-kilometer string of mainland strands are disappointingly grey and the resorts here cater more for Thai groups than solitary horizon-gazing foreigners. In addition, the discovery of oil and natural gas fields in these coastal waters has turned pockets of the first hundred-kilometer stretch into and unsightly industrial landscape of refineries and depots, sometimes referred to as the Eastern Seaboard. Offshore, however, it’s and entirely different story, with island beaches as peaceful and unsullied as many of the more celebrated southern retreats.

The first worthwhile stop comes 100km east of Bangkok at the less than scintillating town of Si Racha, which is the point of access for tiny Ko Si Chang, whose dramatically rugged coastlines and low-key atmosphere make it a restful haven. In complete contrast, Pattaya, just half and hour south, is Thailand’s number-one package-tour destination, its customers predominantly middle-aged Western and Chinese males enticed by the resort’s sex-market reputation and undeterred by its notoriety as the country’s most polluted beach. Things soon look up, though, as the coast veers sharply eastwards towards Ban Phe, revealing the island of Ko Samet, the prettiest of all the beach resorts within comfortable bus-ride range of Bangkok.

East of Ban Phe, the landscape starts to get more lush and hilly as the coastal highway nears Chanthaburi, the dynamo of Thailand’s gem trade and one of only two provincial capitals in the region worth visiting. The other appealing inland city is Trat, 68km further along the highway and an important departure point for Ko Chang, a huge forested island with long, fine beaches, plentiful accommodation and a host of smaller, less developed islets off its coasts. East of Ko Chang lies the Cambodian border post of Ban Hat Lek, one of two points – the other being Aranyaprathet, a little way north – where it is currently legal to cross overland into Cambodia.

Highway 3 extends almost the entire length of the east coast – beginning in Bangkok as Thanon Sukhumvit, and known as such when it cuts through towns – and hundreds of buses ply the route, connecting all major mainland destinations. Buses from Bangkok’s Eastern (Ekamai) Bus Terminal serve all the provincial capitals and tourist spots; there are a few services here from Bangkok’s Northern (Mo Chit) Bus Terminal as well, and tourist minibuses run direct from Banglumphu in Bangkok to the ferry piers for Ko Samet and Ko Chang. One Eastern Line train a day runs in each direction between Bangkok, Si Racha and Pattaya. There’s and airport at U-Tapao naval base, midway between Pattaya and Rayong, served by Bangkok Airways flights to and form Ko Samui and Phnom Penh in Cambodia.

    Highlights

Ko Si Chang – Tiny, barely touristed island with craggy coastlines and appealingly laidback ambience. more …
Pattaya – Away from the girlie bars and high-rise hotels, there’s rewarding year-round wreck and reef diving nearby. more …
Ko Samet – Pretty (and popular) little island fringed with dazzlingly white beaches. more …
Ko Chang – Large, sparsely populated island, with several good beaches and lots of accommodation. more …
Ko Mak – Stay in a teepee-hut on this diminutive island with fine white-sand beaches. more …

  • Tourist Attractions in Koh Samui Island Resort

The Thai resort island Koh Samui is the second largest island in Thailand after the famous James Bond island of Phuket. The island is roughly circular in shape and is located just off the east coast of the Kra Isthmus which is near the mainland town of Surat Thani and it is also one of the most popular tourist attraction in the Kingdom of Thailand.

Koh Samui has a land mass of almost 230 sq km ( about 90 sq mile) with a population of about 50,000 people (2007). The main island is surrounded by about 60 other smaller islands. The central part of Koh Samui is almost uninhabited and is dominated by a mountain jungle with Mount Khao Pom as its highest peak at 635m (about 2100ft). The island’s lowland areas are inter-connected together with just one single road that weaves the circumference of the island.

Historians estimated that the island started to see its first inhabitants in about 1500 years ago. The early settlers were probably fishermen from Malaysia and Southern China. The island even appears on the Chinese Ming Dynasty maps way back in 1687. No one knows for sure how Koh Samui got its name. Some speculated that it was derived from a native Mui tree while others think that it is a hybrid of the Chinese word “saboey”, which means “safe haven”.

Situated on the southwestern coast of the island is Nathon, the ancient capital of Koh Samui. This area is a still major fishing port and also an inter-island transportation hub today. Koh Samui was an isolated self-sufficient community until as late as the 20th century as it had little contact with mainland Thailand back then. The island did not even have a road until one was built in the early 1970s.

Today, the island of Koh Samui is one of the most popular tourist attraction in Thailand and it even have its own international airport, called Samui Airport. Bangkok Airways have flights to and from Samui every day. Samui Airport also receives flights from Bangkok and other major cities in South East Asia.

Samui island’s economy used to be based on subsistence agriculture and fishing, however, from the 1980s, the tourism industry grew by leaps and bounds and is now Koh Samui’s main source of income.

Being an island, Koh Samui’s main tourist attractions are naturally its white beautiful beaches and beach resorts. Tourists can find stretches of beaches and accommodations along the beaches of Chaweng, Lamai, Maenam, Bophut, Bangrak, Choeng MoN, Ao Tong Takian and Nathon with Chaweng and Lamai beaches being the most popular but crowded. For tourists who prefer a quiet beach for relaxation, then check out Maenam beach.

Another popular attraction in Koh Samui is a 12 metre (35 ft) tall statue of the Buddha, affectionately called “Big Buddha”. This statue is located at the top of a ceremonial dragon-steps at the temple of Wat Phra Yai. Koh Samui and is also home to quite a few other impressive temples such as the Wat Khunaram. Wat Khunaram is where the mummified body of Loung Pordaeng, a monk who died in a meditating lotus position is on display.

A sightseeing trip to see Papa and Mama rock at the south of Lamai beach can be very hilarious due to the rocks’ hilarious resemblances to the male and female sexual genitals.

To the more adventurous tourists, the jungle mountain in the interior of the island is a good camping ground for jungle trekking. This area is also home to a number of beautiful gardens, waterfalls at Na Muang and rubber plantations.

Animal lovers can also visit Koh Samui’s numerous animal attractions such as the crocodile farm, the monkey theatre, take elephant rides, a snake farm, a marine aquarium and a butterfly garden.

Most tourists to Koh Samui will make a day trip to the awe inspiring Ang Thong National Marine Park. The best time to visit Koh Samui is in summer (Feb-Apr). With such interesting landscape and attractions, no wonder this island is drawing tourist from around the world all year long.

  • Explore the Beauty of Koh Samui

Explore the Beauty of Koh Samui

Koh Samui is usually called Samui by the locals of Thailand. This island is located at the east coast Kra Isthmus of the country. It is the country’s 3rd major island having a vicinity of 228.7 km as well as a population of more than 50,000. The island is prosperous with white sandy beaches, innate reserves, coconut trees and coral reefs.

Initially, the island was dwelled in by fishermen settlers for approximately 15 centuries back. They came from Southern China and Malay Peninsula. The term Samui is mysterious in particular. Probably this word is an addition to the name of a certain native tree called mui, or perhaps this is a version of the Chinese term Saboey which means “safe haven”. Koh is a Thai term meaning “island”.

During the late twentieth century, the island was a remote independent district, having short association with the Thailand mainland. Koh Samui lack roads until early 1970s, and there is a 15km trip from a side of Samui going to the other side which included a whole-day trek via the mountainous central rain forests.

The island only encounters 2 seasons similar to other areas of southern Thailand. Rainy season arrives during May until December, and dry season happens during January until April. Because the island has a tropical weather, every time there is rain, it pours heavily but not too long.

Previously, Koh Samui’s economy centers on survival agriculture, fishing, and coconut as their main source of crop. Starting 1980s, tourism has made way to change their status and is prevailing nowadays. The establishment of steady, high speed internet connection has made this island a practical spot for IT businesses, which is now providing a certain level of economic assortment. With the island’s weather and accessibility, this has made it really striking for international investors.

A private airport known as Koh Samui Airport is primarily constructed by the Bangkok Airways. Still it is the major operator and the sole airline that provides services to the island going to main Thailand. There are private speedboats that you can hire going back and forth of Koh Samui. Regular boats are linked to Koh Phang-gan and Surat Thani. At daytime there is a boat going to Koh Tao.

It was just in the early 1970s when the original visitors who rode a coconut boat came to Koh Samui. For many years the island only contains a small number of bungalows and a seep of tourists. During the early 1990s was when boats packed with travelers began to arrive at the island and that was when the island become well known. Today, Samui is the 2nd well-liked island destination of Thailand next to Phuket.

This island is a sanctuary of innate beauty, having nice white sand beaches, stunning corals, luscious lagoons, scenic waterfalls, crystal clear water and captivating coconut trees. Tourism is now the leading industry, than the previous one which is the coconut. The progress of Koh Samui is no w paying off. Beaches such as Lamai and Chaweng are congested. Though, there are still serene beaches around.

  • Cruises in Phuket, Thailand Are Definitely Set to Be the Best Yacht Charters in Asia

When I landed in Singapore I went straight to my boat and fired up the laptop. I did a Google search for Phuket Yacht Charter and picked the first boat that came up.

Hey presto, there was a 70ft Catamaran which can sleep up to 16 guests, this was very similar to the boat I was currently on in Singapore however I wasn’t going to waste time and fuel sailing down to Phuket on my Cat.

This was great, I have my sister’s 40th birthday next week and she had only just been saying the other week that she did not know what to do for the celebration. This was the solution!

This looked like it was a fantastic boat for a larger group of guests that wanted absolute luxury on a cruise.

So I booked us all in as a surprise dream cruise for 3 days to the East Coast of Phuket. Im told that cruises to this part of the Island are unbelievable with the magical views of the world famous Phang Nga Bay.

Once this was done I needed to book flights, the best and cheapest I could find after looking around were Tiger Airway budget flights, which only cost around 0USD each return to Singapore so this was great, we were set!

We arrived at Phuket Airport all a little hung-over from the previous nights drinking, where the Shangani Captain, was waiting patiently with a banner. After getting everyone together, we jumped in the minibus and were all transferred to the Ao Po Marina, which is at the entrance to Phang Nga Bay.

WOW! We arrive and it is exactly as it was described! Fantastic! (A few people murmured). The limestone karsts of Phang Nga Bay were ahead of us. This really is like something out of a film, I’m not joking!

We all boarded the boat, and set sail to this Xanadu called Phang Nga Bay, in Phuket where we popped open the first of many bottles of Dom Perignon Champagne, at this point I knew my sister was going to have a 40th birthday that we would all cherish! Until her 50th that is!

This was the first time that many of the party had embarked on a yacht of this kind and many had never been on cruises before, let alone in Thailand so there was a good all round feel onboard!

After the first days cruising around these spectacular islands we Arrive at Ko Hong Phang Nga, were we anchored up for the first Night. There are fantastic surroundings here, we explored all of the sea caves and hidden lagoons by Kayak, which were supplied by the Yacht, all the guys in the party loved these adventures, but many of the ladies stayed on board and enjoyed their champagne and strawberry’s.

The next day after a late evening singing, drinking and dancing (hung-over yet again) on board the yacht, we set sail to Koh Hong Krabi. The beaches are beautiful here. So we all went for a swim and chilled out from the night before.

Now I feel like I’m on holiday! Was one comment I heard from a member of the party, as we swam in the clear waters and viewed the picturesque rock formations. We decided to Anchor up here overnight.

We all enjoyed a lovely dinner cooked buy the Cordon Bleu Chef. Now we were in Paradise!

The next morning we took a memorable scenic cruise down to Ko Naka this has a great long stretch of sandy beach, and a very characteristic little Thai Reggae, Caribbean Beach Shack bar, where one of my brothers friends had a guitar, so we all had a sing song with our feet in the sand sipping cold beer on the beach until sunset.

A lot of the blokes were being absolute kids as usual playing hermit crab racing against each other this was great fun to watch actually!

We enjoyed our last night onboard this fabulous yacht in the Phang Nga Bay which I have to say was as recommended on the Hong Kong to Singapore flight a week earlier, definitely correctly as one of the most magical places in the world! And I will definitely be returning for my 50th!

  • Airline Food Prep

    Airline Food Prep

Airline meals have always been the center of attention for all kinds of reasons – especially for their quality. Earlier, the quality was hailed to be unpalatable. But now, with changing times, the quality of airline meals has improved.

Airline meals have always been looked at with suspicion. ‘Cardboard Potatoes’ and ‘Mystery Meat’ are some of the funny names people gave to the food items served on the fights. This however explains the condition of the food offered to the travelers. Today Airline catering business is growing at a fast pace and has become a million-dollar industry. With each day the number of people travelling by air is increasing, however if airline industry experience any downswing the first area that faces the budget cuts is the ‘Airline Foods and Beverages.’

Decades back when the Airline Industry began to spread its wings, the food served was a hot multi-course meal that was actually cooked on the flights and travelers used to be seated at the dining tables to have their food. As time progressed, traffic in Airline Traveling increased and this led to the preparation of large amount of food. It was then decided to pre-prepare the meal and warm it when required. The food was only reassembled by this time.

Today, the tickets bought on the budget airlines do not include snacks and drinks on its purchase, not even drinking water. They have to be bought if required. However, the long-haul flights always include meals, like breakfast – snack – lunch – snack – dinner – snack. Generally, the standard full course meal served on Airplanes begin with appetizers with a bag of nuts or pretzels. After that, a tray full of salad along with the main course is handed out. The main course meal includes: Seafood and Meat for non-vegetarians and Vegetables, Pasta, Potato Rolls and Rice with Butter for vegetarians; and Asian Pickles and Custard and / or Fresh Fruits for Dessert. The meal is ended with tea and coffee as required along with crackers and cheese. The breakfast given out to the travelers constitutes Bread, Eggs, Potatoes or Bacon and Pastries.

The variety of food is based on the tickets purchased by the passenger. Meals for Business Class and Economy Class are separate. The food is served in supreme quality Cutlery and Bone China to the first class or the business class travelers.

However, there are many Airlines that serve excellent food and beverages to their Economy class passengers too, like Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, as well as Thai Airlines. Airlines such as Singapore Airlines provide their Business class travelers with five-star meals and Air New Zealand offers Wine with their meals. The quality of food has remarkably improved and has become the major attraction of the trade. The higher the price of the ticket the better the meals are served and with much variety.

  • Langkawi Island, Malaysia

    Langkawi Island, Malaysia

    Introducing Langkawi Island

Langkawi Island belongs to a group of islands located about 19 miles (30 kilometers) from the northwestern shores of Peninsular Malaysia. The island has a population of 45,000 and the capital is Kuah with a population of only 12,000. For an island of its size and a population of only 45,000, Langkawi is not a very populated island.

Langkawi was once a sleepy island and its main activity was fishing and farming but today receives nearly 2 million tourists each year, attracted by the island’s sandy beaches and sunny skies. However, the island never seems crowded with tourists since many of the accommodations are spread out around the island.

Getting to Langkawi Island By Plane

Langkawi International Airport is about 20 minutes by car from Kuah and not more than 40 minutes from the furthest beach. Most flights to Langkawi are domestic flights served by low cost airlines Air Asia and Firefly flying from Malaysian airports near Kuala Lumpur (40 minutes to Langkawi) and Penang (20 minutes to Langkawi).

International flights to Langkawi are mainly from Singapore served by Tiger Airways and Silk Air and the flying time from Singapore to Langkawi is about an hour. There are also the occasional chartered or seasonal flights to Langkawi from Europe and Japan but there are no direct flights from cities in the United States or Canada.

    By Ferry

There are also ferry services from the mainland departing from Kuala Perlis and Kuala Kedah to the ferry terminal in Langkawi and the travel time is about 45 and 90 minutes respectively. There are also ferry services from the island of Penang (3 hours) and the Thai border town of Satun.

The journey by road from Kuala Lumpur to the ferry terminals is more than 250 miles (400 kilometers). Therefore it’s best to fly rather than take the road and then ferry to Langkawi if traveling from Kuala Lumpur unless traveling to the northwestern corner of Peninsular Malaysia is your plan.

Kuah – The Capital of Langkawi

Kuah is the capital and commercial center of Langkawi Island with a population of only 12,000. Kuah is a small town and rather laidback considering that the island receives nearly 2 million visitors every year.

There is not much to see or do in Kuah except shopping namely for duty-free items. There are also not many choices of eateries in Kuah other than a few fast food outlets. The best place to eat out is at Pantai Cenang about 2 miles (5 kilometers) from Kuah where there are greater choices.

    The Beaches

The beaches in Langkawi Island are for most part sandy and surrounded by the crystal blue waters of the Adaman Sea. Thus, visitors are spoilt with choices for a preferred beach destination in Langkawi. There are the popular beaches with the usual tourist trappings and the quieter beaches that are away from the tourist crowd.

The beaches of Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah are among the popular beaches in Langkawi but are rather touristy with their hotels, restaurants, shops, and entertainment spots. Burau Bay, Pantai Rhu, and Datai Bay are quieter beaches with one or two resorts occupying each beach and perfect places for a quiet getaway.

    Hotels & Resorts

There are a couple of 2 to 3-star hotels in Kuah and being away from the beach are usually cheaper than those near the beaches. Visitors staying in Kuah Town generally have duty-free shopping in mind rather than the beaches.

Those preferring accommodations beside the beach, there are plenty of options along Pantai Cenang followed by Pantai Tengah. Accommodations are mainly 3 to 5-star hotels or resorts and most have facilities such as swimming pools, restaurants, and bars. There are not many accommodations along the beaches of Burau Bay, Pantai Rhu and Datai Bay and occupied mainly by 4 to 5-star holiday resorts and expect to pay for the privilege of a quiet beach.

    Mt Machinchang

Visiting Langkawi’s mountains should not be missed. It is possible to reach the top of Mt Machinchang situated more than 2,300 feet (700 meters) above sea level. Cable cars take passengers between the base station at the Oriental Village and the top of Mt Machinchang.

At the mountain top, there is a curved suspension bridge called the Skybridge spanning a length of 410 feet (125 meters) supported by steel cables. From the bridge, visitors can view the rainforest below and the sea beyond, which is simply breathtaking.

    Shopping

Langkawi is a duty-free island for both Malaysian and foreign visitors to the island. Popular duty-free items here include the usual alcohol and cigarettes as well as consumer electronics, leather goods, clothes, chinaware, and confectionary. There are several duty-free outlets situated in the shopping centers in Kuah including the popular Jetty Point Mall just beside the ferry terminal.

    Other Attractions & Interests

Underwater World is an aquarium located about 15 minutes drive from Kuah’s town center. There are collections of freshwater and marine creatures at the aquarium from around the island and other parts of the world. Collections include sharks, stingrays, crustaceans, huge Arapaima fish from the Amazon, and Rockhopper penguins from South Africa.

There are boat cruises taking visitors around Langkawi and the neighboring islands. Visitors can make bookings from outlets located near the ferry terminal. Visitors can also book these boat cruises from some of the hotels but expect to pay more. The Langkawi Crocodile Farm is about 16 miles (32 kilometers) from Kuah and crocodiles here are bred for their skins. The Snake Sanctuary has a collection of venomous and non-venomous snakes from around the world. Another attraction is the Langkawi Bird Paradise, which is home to more than 150 species of birds.

    Transport

Public transport on the island is limited or minimal. Taxis are available but few and mostly found waiting at the airport and ferry terminal. A good option for traveling in a group is to hire a van with a driver for half a day or the whole day.

There are plenty of car, scooter, and motorbike rentals in Langkawi and companies offering these services can be found at the airport, hotels, ferry terminal, and along the beaches. A valid driving license is required and many foreign licenses including those from Europe and North America are accepted.

    Travelling in Pattaya

Pattaya City is divided into four major zones: North Pattaya, Central Pattaya, South Pattaya and Chomthian. It should be noted that there is a small mountain known as the Hill, located between South Pattaya and Chomthian. For a visual illustration take a look at the Map of Pattaya and Chomthian with the Hill.

Motorbikes are the most popular mode of transport in Pattaya. However, transportation in the city is facilitated through the use of special cars (song taew), customized pickup trucks with passenger seats in a covered overhead back cabin. These pickups, known as Bahts-Bus, can easily carry 8-10 passengers in the back, plus 1 or 2 passengers in front. They circle around the city and are allowed to stop anywhere. In addition to motorbike-taxis, the Bahts-Buses are the only form of public transport permitted in Pattaya. If not occupied, they also can be hired as private taxis. In fact, they are private vehicles in most cases belonging to the drivers. There are so many of them that they end up looking for passengers.

This compact city consists of 3 major roads that parallel each other. Right along the beach is Beach Rd., which is a one-way road from the north to south that is a few kilometers long. Second Rd. is a hundred or so meters away and carries city transport mainly from the south to north, although it is partly a two-way road. The last road is Sukhumvit Rd, a continuation of the highway leading to Bangkok. Many small streets called Soi(s) cross the roads. And it’s advisable to walk some of the small streets, which are enumerated from north to south, although some have names. Second Rd. continues on to South Pattaya and turns to Chomthian reaching Chomthian beach within 5 minutes, and continues alongside Chomthian beach, which is approximately 20 kilometers long with some secluded escapes.

Chomthian Beach Rd., which is a two-way road, also parallels Sukhumvit Rd and is the only road in the Chomthian area, except for some connecting streets. On the other side of Sukhumvit road are several country clubs, golf courses and typical Thai rural villages, providing charming escapes on the banks of sweet-water lakes and small streams in the leisurely and relaxing countryside.

Many kinds of motorbikes, convertible monster Jeeps, sport and passenger cars are offered for rent. A driver’s license is not required for driving around Pattaya and vicinity, so many tourists are tempted get behind the wheel. It should be noted that in Thailand drivers drive on the left lane, as in England and Japan

  • Myanmar’s Air Bagan offers Direct flights from Burma to Phuket, Thailand

MYANMAR – Air Bagan, the Myanmar (Burmese) airline, has announced the introduction of direct flights between Yangon (Rangoon) in Myanmar (Burma ) and Phuket, Thailand.

The first flight will be on April 11th 2011, with two flights scheduled per week on Mondays and Fridays. Return tickets will cost in the region of 10,900 baht (US0), including in-flight food and drinks.

Tickets are already on sale for the new route via the airline’s website, but later this month Air Bagan will open a ticket office in Phuket Town.

“The flights will be much more convenient and cheaper for tourists already in Phuket. The direct flights from Phuket will take just two hours, whereas the current flights depart only from Bangkok ,” said PB Travel Agency Centre, Managing Director, Suranat Taweesap.

The flights from Phuket will connect to a further twenty one destinations within Myanmar.

To promote the launch of the new route, Air Bagan has announced two discounted travel packages, including accommodation, return flights, food and tours of Yangon, Hongawadee and Kyaikhtiyo.

The packages cost 20,990 baht (US0), if travelling between April 11th and 14th, and 19,900 baht (US$ 655) for trips taken from April 15th to 18th 2011.

The airline has also said it is planning direct flights to Siem Reap in Cambodia as well as Bangkok , Kunming and Kuala Lumpur  in Malaysia and Singapore in the near future.

  • Get to Phuket

    Get to Phuket

    AIR

Air Thai operates nearly a dozen daily flights form Bangkok. The direct flight takes and hour and 25 minutes, but some flights stop in Hat Yai for half and hour. There are also regular flights to and from Hat Yai.

Bangkok Airways flies between Samui Island and Phuket Island twice daily (once a week in June and September).

Angle Airlines recently introduced flights to Phuket Island from Bangkok and Singapore. Angle’s office is at Phuket international Airport.

THAI flies between Phuket Island and several international destinations, including Penang, Langkawi, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei and Sydney. Other international airlines with offices in Phuket are: Malaysia Airline, Silk Air, Singapore Airlines and China Airlines.

Southern Helicopter service at the airport charters a seven passenger helicopter. The service covers all of Phuket Island and Ao Phang Nga beach, including Phi Phi Island. Southern Flying Group does small aero plane charters.

    BUS

All direct air-conditioner buses from Bangkok’s Southern Bus Terminal make the journey overnight, leaving at approximately half-hourly intervals between 5.30pm and 7pm and arriving about fourteen hours later. Most air-conditioner buses from Phuket to Bangkok also make the journey overnight, though there are a few departures during the morning. There is no train service to Phuket, but if you can’t face taking the bus all the way from Bangkok, a more comfortable (and less nerve-wracking) alternative would be to book an overnight sleeper train to Surat Thani, about 290km east of Phuket, and take a bus from there to Phuket (about six hours). There are fourteen buses a day between Surat Thani and Phuket, all traveling via Khao Sok, Takua Pa and Khao Lak; and six private minibuses a day from Phuket to Surat Thani. Takua Pa is a useful interchange for local services to Khuraburi and Ranong, though there are four direct buses a day between Ranong and Phuket. As for points further south : seventeen buses a day run between Krabi and Phuket, via Phang Nga, and there are also frequent services to and form Trang, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Hat Yai.

    Boat

If you’re coming to Phuket form Phi Phi Island or Lanta Island, the quickest and most scenic option is to take the boat. During peak season, up to four ferries a day make the trip to and from Phi Phi Island, taking between ninety minutes and two and a half hours and docking at the deep-sea port on Phuket’s southeast coast; during low season, there’s at least one ferry a day in both directions. Travelers from Lanta Island have to change boats on Phi Phi Island. Minibuses meet the ferries in Phuket and charge 100B per person for transfer to Phuket town and the major west-coast beaches, or 150B to the airport.

  • Ferries to Koh Samui

    Ferries to Koh Samui

Instead of taking the route from Bangkok direct to Koh Samui using Bangkok Airways there is another way to get to Koh Samui and can work out a little cheaper. You can use Nok Air to fly to Suratthani airport then get the bus service to Donsak port where you can catch a ferry to Koh Samui or Koh Phangan

    Samui Flights

In detail if you got a flight to Surrathani from anywhere in Thailand when you arrive in Surrathani airport their is a bus service to Surrathani town. This will bring you another bus station where you can catch a bus to Donsak port. You can also book in Surrathani airport a bus to Donsak port , they will try to sell you a ticket for the ferry, which is your option, but most the time its best to buy it at the port.

If you flew with Nok Air they offer the oprion to buy an all in one ticket all the way to Koh Samui, which includes the ferry. They use the company Lomprayah which operates the fast ferry service to Koh Samui from Donsak , this is a new service by them.

Overall the it does take longer to do this way, the flight from Bangkok to Samui is about 35mins. Flight to Surrathani is about the same, but then you have a 2 hour bus ride from the airport to Surrathani town. Quite enjoyable ride and you get to see some real Thailand life. Once in Surrathani you will then need to wait for the bus to Donsak which can sometimes be a few hours at the most. But this gives you a chance to look around Surrathani town, again which is a real Thai town and not really catered for the tourist. A few markets and plenty of shops, including 7/11′s which we all love to see and use. Even a pizzahut in Surrathani!

    Samui Ferries

Donsak port is small, and deals with one perpose getting people to Koh Samui. A small restaurant , shop and credit card machines are here. Lots of buses coming ang going plus lots of cars waiting to board the ferries.

Once you arrive in Samui you will land at Nathon port , here you find plenty of taxis to take you anywhere on the Island.

A pleasent expereince and not too bad of a journey. Ive done it many times. Watch your bags, dont forget your bags on the bus, and follow the orders from the Thai’s its easier.

Warning : Dont pay anything extra at any offices that will tell you the boat is full or its delayed. A trick they use to get more money from you to intend of giving you a better service.
