   In the 1990s, Taylor Mali’s performative, witty and unabashedly flashy work quickly made him a star in the national poetry slam scene… and it could have served to make him a cliché as well as he entered this millennium.

   But instead all the craft, heart and honesty — found glittering in that early work — deepened and evolved, and as proof of this, Mali has offered up “Icarus Airlines,” a modern yet timeless spoken word album that truly delivers.

   Mali generously invites listeners into his world, a world filled with laughter and tears, heartbreak and new love, celebrating family and community, and being teacher and student. The resultant mash-up of poems is a risky but ultimately successful experience; the incendiary potential of their juxtapositions, satisfyingly realized.

   This latest album proves not only why Mali has been considered one of the slam’s best poets, but also why (and how) he has remained one.
